Hello and Welcome to our forums. I was always thinking that Greenleaf was more of a title since Legolas is a prince. And Haldir of Lórien - what I believe is somehow his last name - wasn't a very spoken man. This also reflects in the meaning of his name "hidden hero".

Haldir didn't have a last name I was married to him for a short while and Galadriel and Celeborn did call him a hero of middle~earth Legolas was given Greenleaf by Galadriel and the Las in Legolas dose mean leaf.

So it is more an expantion of his front name and therefor not a real last name.

That is also a fact though it was not always said like that and the last names of these days have the meaning son of many times.
A second name, surname or title is also used. Example: Beleg Strongbow
Appearance does much to Example: Elwë Singollo
